Chapter 124 Principal's Office Showdown
The atmosphere in Principal Seraphis's office was suffocating. The room, adorned with dark wood furniture and shelves overflowing with books, exuded an air of authority that matched its occupant. A large window behind her desk let in faint sunlight, but it did little to alleviate the tension hanging in the air.
Enara and I sat side by side in uncomfortable chairs, while Ananara perched smugly on the edge of the desk, looking far too pleased with himself for someone who wasn't going to help. Seraphis loomed over us, her arms crossed and her expression a mixture of exasperation and fury.
"I've lost count of how many times I've told you both," Seraphis began, her voice tight with barely restrained anger, "that this Academy is not your personal battlefield."
"Hey, I didn't start the fight," I said, raising my hands defensively.
"No, but you certainly escalated it," she snapped.
"That's not fair!" I argued. "They were trying to kidnap Enara! What was I supposed to do, invite them to tea?"
Enara, to her credit, remained silent, though I could feel her irritation simmering beside me.
"Enough with the excuses," Seraphis said sharply. "You're reckless, Liria. Every time something happens, you're at the center of it, and I'm left cleaning up the mess."
"Maybe if you trained your students better, they wouldn't need me to bail them out," I shot back before I could stop myself.
The temperature in the room seemed to drop several degrees.
"Oh, she's done it now," Ananara muttered, his voice dripping with fake pity.
"Stay out of this, pineapple!" I hissed, glaring at him.
"I will not 'stay out of this,'" Seraphis cut in, her tone icy. "Ananara may be insufferable, but at least he's not endangering the entire Academy with his antics."
"Insufferable?" Ananara gasped, feigning offense. "I am the voice of reason in this chaos!"
"You're a fruit with a superiority complex," I shot back.
"Enough!" Seraphis barked, her voice like thunder. "I am not here to mediate your petty squabbles. We have serious matters to discuss."
She turned her piercing gaze on Enara. "Princess, do you understand the gravity of what happened today?"
Enara nodded stiffly. "Yes, Principal Seraphis. I do."
"And do you also understand that your presence here puts everyone in danger if proper precautions aren't taken?"
Enara's jaw tightened, but she nodded again. "I do."
"Good. Then perhaps you can explain why you insist on refusing the additional guards I've assigned to you."
"Because I don't need them!" Enara burst out, her composure cracking. "I'm not some fragile ornament to be locked away and protected! I can fight, and Liria can—"
"Liria is not your bodyguard," Seraphis interrupted, her tone sharp. "She's a student, just like you, and she has enough on her plate without playing the hero every other day."
I opened my mouth to argue, but the system's voice rang out in my mind.
[System Notification: Principal Seraphis's Threat Level – High. Recommend proceeding with caution.]
Gee, thanks for the vote of confidence, I thought back.
"I don't need a lecture about responsibility," I said aloud, folding my arms. "I did what I had to do to keep Enara safe. If that's such a problem, maybe you should take it up with whoever keeps sending assassins and kidnappers after her."
Seraphis pinched the bridge of her nose, exhaling sharply. "You are infuriating."
"So I've been told," I said with a shrug.
"Liria," Enara said quietly, her tone uncharacteristically soft. "Maybe we should just... listen for now."
I glanced at her, surprised. Enara rarely backed down from a fight, verbal or otherwise.
"Fine," I muttered. "Let's hear it. What's the grand plan, Principal?"
Seraphis straightened, clearly not expecting my sudden compliance. "The plan," she said, "is to ensure that neither of you finds yourselves in another situation like today. To that end, I will personally oversee a new training regimen for both of you."
"What?" Enara and I said in unison, our voices filled with equal parts disbelief and horror.
"You heard me," Seraphis said firmly. "You both need discipline, strategy, and control. And since neither of you seems capable of learning that on your own, I'll make sure you learn it under my supervision."
"Absolutely not," I said immediately.
"This isn't up for debate," Seraphis replied, her tone leaving no room for argument.
"You're forcing us to be your apprentices?" Enara asked, her eyes narrowing.
"You'll thank me later," Seraphis said with a faint smirk.
"Doubt it," I muttered under my breath.
"You're lucky I'm even giving you this opportunity," Seraphis continued. "After today's fiasco, I could very well expel both of you for endangering the Academy."Nôv(el)B\\jnn
"I'd like to see you try," I said before I could stop myself.
The system chimed in immediately.
[System Notification: Host, this is not the recommended course of action.]
Oh, really? I thought back sarcastically. You don't say.
"Enough with the attitude, Liria," Seraphis snapped. "You have potential, but if you keep squandering it, you'll never amount to anything more than a reckless troublemaker."
I clenched my fists, biting back the retort on the tip of my tongue. As much as I hated to admit it, she wasn't entirely wrong.
"Fine," I said through gritted teeth. "We'll do your stupid training. But don't think for a second that this means I'm your apprentice."
"We'll see," Seraphis said, her smirk returning.
As she began outlining the details of our punishment I mean, training regimen I couldn't help but feel like I'd just walked into a trap.
Seraphis continued outlining the training regimen as though she hadn't just announced our collective doom. She spoke with an air of finality, pacing behind her desk like some kind of war general. Enara and I exchanged a glance, both of us trying to calculate how bad this was going to be.
"You'll report here every morning at dawn," Seraphis began. "No excuses, no exceptions. The training will include combat drills, tactical lessons, and magic control. By the end of the term, you will either be disciplined fighters or... well, we'll cross that bridge if we get to it."
I frowned. "Dawn? You're kidding, right? That's practically nighttime."
"It's non-negotiable," Seraphis replied without missing a beat.
"I'm starting to think you just want to torture us," I muttered.
"Starting?" Ananara chimed in, his tone laced with amusement. "I thought you'd already reached that conclusion."
"Shut up, pineapple," I snapped.

[Careful, Host,] the system's voice chimed in my head, its tone maddeningly calm. "Antagonizing both the principal and your familiar may not be the wisest strategy."
Thanks for the advice I didn't ask for, I thought back sourly.
"Liria," Seraphis said sharply, snapping me out of my internal grumbling. "This is exactly why you need this training. You're impulsive, undisciplined, and you have a habit of running your mouth at the worst possible moments."
"I don't run my mouth," I protested.
"You just proved my point," she said dryly.
Enara, who had been unusually quiet up until now, finally spoke up. "If this training is going to be so rigorous, will it at least address real threats? Like the ones we faced today?"
Seraphis's expression softened slightly. "Yes, Princess. That's precisely the point. The Academy is supposed to be a place of safety, but as you've seen, we cannot rely on that alone. You need to be prepared for anything and anyone who may come after you."
Enara nodded, her gaze steady. "Then I'll do it. Whatever it takes."
I stared at her, dumbfounded. "Seriously? You're okay with this?"
"I'm not thrilled," she admitted. "But if it means I can protect myself—and those around me—then yes, I'm okay with it."
Her words hit harder than I wanted to admit. Enara might only be twelve, but there was a weight to her determination that made me feel like the child in the room.
"Fine," I grumbled. "I'm in too. But if I pass out from exhaustion, I'm blaming you."
"You'll survive," Seraphis said with a faint smirk. "Now, let's discuss your first task."
I groaned audibly. "We haven't even started, and you're already giving us homework?"
"This isn't homework," Seraphis replied. "It's an assessment. I need to know what I'm working with. You'll both face a series of challenges tomorrow morning to test your skills—both individually and as a team."
Enara straightened in her seat, her competitive side clearly intrigued. "What kind of challenges?"
"Combat scenarios, magic control, problem-solving under pressure," Seraphis listed. "And perhaps a surprise or two."
I slumped in my chair. "Great. I can't wait to humiliate myself in front of everyone."
"It won't be public," Seraphis assured me. "This is between us, though the results will determine how I tailor your training."
"Tailor it to what?" I asked suspiciously.
"To your strengths—and your weaknesses," she said, her golden eyes glinting.
I didn't like the sound of that.
"Before you leave," Seraphis added, turning her attention to Ananara, "I suggest you keep your familiar under control, Liria. His commentary is as distracting as it is infuriating."
"Excuse me," Ananara said, his voice dripping with faux indignation. "I am a paragon of wisdom and insight. The problem lies with those who fail to appreciate me."
"Did I mention insufferable?" Seraphis muttered under her breath.
I stifled a laugh, earning a sharp glare from Ananara.
As the meeting finally wrapped up, Enara and I stood to leave, though Seraphis's final words hung heavily in the air.
"Remember," she said, her tone softer but no less firm. "This training isn't just for you. It's for everyone who depends on you. If you want to protect them, you have to be ready for what's coming."
The weight of her words settled on me as we stepped out into the hallway. For a moment, neither Enara nor I spoke.
"Do you think she's right?" Enara asked quietly.
"About what?"
"About us needing this," she said, her midnight eyes searching mine.
I sighed, rubbing the back of my neck. "I don't know. Maybe. Probably."
Enara nodded, her expression thoughtful. "Then we'd better not screw it up."
I snorted. "Speak for yourself, Princess. I don't screw up—I improvise."
She rolled her eyes but smiled faintly. "Let's just survive tomorrow, okay?"
"Deal," I said, offering her a small grin.
As we headed back to the dorms, I couldn't shake the feeling that Seraphis's training might actually be the least of our problems. Something bigger was brewing something that even the system hadn't warned me about yet.
What do you think?
