Chapter 277 The Shadow Raid (4) Close The Portal!
The convergence point pulsed violently as Sophie's frosted blade made contact, the chill of her magic clashing with the dark energy. Draven's twin blades cut through the dark tendrils that spiraled outwards, severing the link between the artifact and the portal, but the sheer power resisting them was immense.
He could feel the energy pushing back, almost alive, a dark malevolence that seemed determined to hold its grip on this world.
Sophie gritted her teeth, her muscles straining against the force. The energy was unlike anything she'd ever encountered—it was heavy, oppressive, and it fought against her every swing. Her fingers tightened around the hilt of her blade, the cold magic swirling and surging forward.
She could hear the clangs and roars of the battle behind her—the grunts and shouts of her knights, the deep growl of the magma bear, the sharp thwack of Sylvanna's arrows hitting their marks.
"Dravis, it's too strong!" Sophie shouted over the din, her voice laced with both determination and strain. She could feel the pressure, the dark tendrils threatening to push them back. Her breath came in ragged gasps, each strike feeling as though she were swinging against a solid wall.
Draven's eyes were focused, his expression cold and calculating as always. He barely spared her a glance, his attention locked on the artifact. "Keep pushing. We're almost through."
His words were clipped, almost devoid of emotion, but there was a certainty in them that steadied Sophie. She nodded, her gaze hardening as she thrust her sword forward, the frost spreading and cracking against the dark energy. She wouldn't give up. Not here, not now.
Behind them, Sharon was engaged in a fierce struggle with a shadow creature that had emerged from the swirling darkness around the portal. The thing moved like smoke, shifting unpredictably, its twisted form lashing out with claws that seemed to cut through the very air. Sharon let out a growl, her broad sword swinging wide, cleaving through one of its limbs.
"Stay down, damn it!" she yelled, her voice full of fury and frustration. She glanced back at Sophie, her eyes filled with worry. "My Lady, hurry!"
Sylvanna perched higher on a rocky ledge, her arrows flying with precision, each one striking down the shadow creatures that tried to overwhelm the knights. She had her sharp eyes trained on Sophie and Draven, watching as they tried to sever the connection at the artifact. Her fingers moved deftly, nocking and releasing arrows, the movements almost mechanical.
"Focus on the tendrils! They're reforming!" Sylvanna called, her voice carrying over the chaos. She could see the dark energy slowly winding back together, the severed tendrils growing back, inching towards the portal to re-establish the connection.
Rhea darted between the shadow creatures, her daggers flashing as she struck at their weak points. She moved with agility and precision, her small form weaving in and out of danger. She could see the strain on Sophie's face, the way the captain fought with every ounce of her strength, and it drove her forward. "Theo, cover Sophie!" she shouted, her voice rising above the din.
Theo nodded, his shield raised high. He moved to Sophie's side, his large frame a protective barrier against the oncoming attacks. He blocked the swipe of a shadow's claw, his shield glowing faintly with the residual magic of Sophie's frost. He stepped forward, pushing back the creature before bringing his sword down in a swift arc, cleaving it in two.
"Just keep going, Captain!" Theo's voice was calm, though his eyes were filled with intensity. "We've got your back!"
The magma bear roared, its molten body shifting as it moved closer, the heat from its core growing hotter with every step. It swung its massive paw, crushing a shadow creature under its weight. The heat radiated through the chamber, forcing the shadows into their physical forms, giving the knights a fighting chance.
Sophie took a deep breath, her eyes locking onto the convergence point. The dark energy pulsed, almost as if it were alive, and she could feel the malice radiating from it. She stepped forward, her blade glowing with frost as she swung it down with all her strength.
The convergence point shuddered, the dark energy flickering, and for a brief moment, Sophie thought they had won. But then, from the swirling portal, a massive hand emerged—dark, twisted, and covered in heavy armor. It grabbed the edge of the portal, pulling itself through.
Sophie's heart sank as she saw what followed—a massive orc, its eyes glowing with the same dark energy, its body twisted and corrupted, stepped out of the portal, followed by two more just like it.
"No…" Sophie whispered, her eyes wide with shock. These orcs were different from the ones they had fought before—they were larger, more powerful, and the dark energy that radiated from them was overwhelming.
Draven's sharp eyes assessed the situation, his mind racing as he took in the sight. This was worse than he had anticipated. The portal wasn't just a connection—it was a gateway. And now, the corrupted orcs were coming through.
He turned his head slightly, his voice cold and commanding as he shouted to the group. "Sylvanna, Rhea—keep those new orcs distracted! Theo, Sharon, Doran—focus on the remaining shadows! Sophie, we need to sever the convergence now, or they'll just keep coming."
Sophie nodded, her eyes filled with determination despite the fear that gripped her heart. She looked at the convergence point, then at the newly emerged orcs. They were massive, their dark armor glinting in the crimson light of the chamber, their eyes filled with hatred. She took a deep breath, her blade glowing with frost as she turned back to the convergence point.
"We can't let them win," she said softly, almost to herself. She lifted her sword, the frost building along its edge as she prepared to strike.
Sharon let out a roar, charging at one of the orcs, her broadsword raised high. She swung with all her might, her blade clanging against the orc's armor, the impact sending shockwaves up her arms. The orc barely flinched, its crimson eyes locking onto Sharon, filled with dark intent.
"Come on, you ugly bastard!" Sharon shouted, her face twisted in determination. She swung again, her blade connecting with the orc's arm, but the dark energy seemed to absorb the impact, and the orc merely grunted, lifting its massive axe.n/o/vel/b//in dot c//om
Rhea darted in from the side, her daggers aimed at the orc's unprotected side. She struck with precision, her blades finding the gaps in the armor, and the orc let out a growl, swinging its arm in retaliation. Rhea ducked under the swing, her eyes sharp as she moved away, her breath coming in short bursts.
"Sylvanna! Now!" Rhea shouted, her eyes locking onto the archer above.
Sylvanna nodded, her fingers moving quickly as she drew back her bowstring. Her eyes narrowed, her focus absolute as she let the arrow fly. It shot through the air, striking the orc's exposed neck. The creature roared, its massive form swaying for a moment before it fell, the dark energy dissipating into the air.
Draven watched, his sharp gaze assessing the battlefield. They were making progress, but the portal was still open, and more shadows were beginning to emerge. They needed to act fast, or they would be overwhelmed.
He turned back to Sophie, his eyes narrowing as he watched her strike at the convergence point. The dark energy flickered, the tendrils writhing as they tried to reattach to the portal. Draven moved beside her, his blades glowing faintly as he struck at the same point, their combined attacks slowly weakening the connection.
"Sophie, focus everything you have," Draven said, his voice cold but filled with an intensity that drew her attention. "This is our only chance to close it."
Sophie looked at him, her eyes meeting his. There was something in his gaze—something beyond the cold detachment she always saw. It was fleeting, but it was enough. She nodded, her heart pounding as she focused her magic, the frost building until her entire blade was covered in a shimmering layer of ice.
"Together," she said, her voice steady despite the chaos around them.
Draven nodded, his eyes sharp as they both moved in tandem. They struck at the convergence point, their blades cutting through the dark tendrils. The energy shuddered, the crimson light flickering, and for a moment, the entire chamber seemed to tremble.
The dark energy began to unravel, the tendrils snapping as the connection between the artifact and the portal weakened. The portal flickered, the shimmering surface destabilizing, and the dark figures within began to fade.
"It's working!" Theo shouted, his shield raised high as he blocked an incoming attack. "Keep going!"
Sophie gritted her teeth, her muscles straining as she swung her blade again. The convergence point shuddered, the dark energy beginning to break apart. She could feel it—victory was within their grasp.
Suddenly, a guttural roar echoed through the chamber, and Sophie turned her head just in time to see one of the corrupted orcs charging towards them, its massive blade raised high. She barely had time to react, her heart pounding in her chest as the orc closed the distance.
Draven moved without hesitation, stepping in front of Sophie, his blades crossing as he blocked the orc's attack.
