The Villain Professor's Second Chance

Chapter 274 The Shadow Raid (1) Entering The Cave Again

Dravis watched the entire exchange, his expression unreadable. He could see the shift in their dynamics—the way Sharon, for all her bluster, had acknowledged Sylvanna's point. It wasn't perfect, but it was a start. They needed to trust each other, and sometimes that trust came from conflict, from testing each other's limits.n/ô/vel/b//in dot c//om

Sophie let out a sigh, stepping forward now that the fight was over. She placed a gentle hand on Sharon's shoulder, her voice soft. "You alright?"

Sharon looked up at her, her eyes filled with a mix of frustration and gratitude. "Yes, My Lady. I'm sorry."

Sophie shook her head, offering her a small smile. "No need to apologize. Just remember—we're in this together. We all have our strengths, and we need to rely on each other."

Sharon nodded, her gaze shifting to Sylvanna, who gave her a lazy salute in response. "Yeah… I get it."

Sylvanna's smirk softened, and she gave Sharon a nod, one that seemed to carry an unspoken agreement between them. It wasn't friendship—at least, not yet—but it was the beginning of something better. A grudging respect, perhaps even the foundations of a real camaraderie that would be crucial in the battles to come.

Dravis turned away, his eyes scanning the dark depths of the cave, his focus already moving ahead to what awaited them. The brief clash between Sharon and Sylvanna was over, but the real fight lay beyond. He could feel it, the oppressive energy growing stronger the deeper they ventured. The shadows weren't done with them—not by a long shot.

"The cave is still ahead," Dravis said, his voice calm but carrying a note of urgency that cut through the lingering tension of the moment. "Whatever power resides within, it hasn't been destroyed yet. We need to keep moving if we are to eliminate the source."

Sophie looked at him, her eyes narrowing slightly as she studied his face. There was always something about Dravis—something hidden beneath his cold, detached exterior. She didn't know if she trusted him entirely, but he had saved them more than once, and he spoke with the authority of someone who understood what they were up against.

"Right," Sophie said, nodding, her voice filled with determination. She turned back to the group, her tone commanding but filled with the warmth that defined her leadership. "Everyone, gather up. We're heading further in. Stay focused. We know now that we can use the magma bear's flames to keep the shadows materialized.

We need to keep that in mind as we advance."

The knights moved into formation, their eyes still flickering with tension but now tempered by a sense of unity. Sharon moved closer to Sylvanna, and though she kept her eyes ahead, there was no more anger in her posture, no more uncontrolled aggression. Sylvanna gave her a sideways glance, her lips twitching slightly as if she wanted to say something snarky but decided against it.

Instead, she simply said, "Watch my back, will you?"

Sharon glanced at her, then gave a brief, curt nod. "Always."

A silence settled over them, broken only by the distant echoes of dripping water and the low rumble of the magma bear following close behind, its heavy steps reverberating through the stone. The air grew colder as they ventured deeper, the walls narrowing around them, covered in ancient runes that seemed to pulse with each step they took.

Evan, the youngest knight, walked near the rear of the group, his spear held at the ready. His eyes were wide, his face pale, but there was a determination there—a desire to prove himself, to show that he belonged alongside these seasoned fighters. He glanced up at Rhea, who moved with cat-like grace beside him, her twin daggers gleaming faintly.

"You think there's more of those things ahead?" Evan asked, his voice barely above a whisper, not wanting to disturb the tense silence that had fallen over the group.

Rhea gave him a quick look, her eyes sharp but not unkind. "Definitely," she said, her tone blunt but honest. "But we've dealt with them before. We'll manage."

Evan swallowed, nodding as he tightened his grip on his spear. "Yeah. We will."

The deeper they went, the more oppressive the air became. It was as if the very cave was alive, breathing around them, its ancient secrets weighing heavily on their shoulders. Dravis could feel it—the pull of something dark, something powerful. It was ahead, and it was waiting for them.

As they reached a wider chamber, the darkness seemed to thicken, and the runes on the walls glowed a deep, foreboding crimson. The cave opened up, revealing a vast cavern with a deep chasm cutting through its center. A narrow stone bridge spanned the chasm, and beyond it, a massive stone door loomed, covered in more of the ancient runes that glowed with the same malevolent light.

The same thing Dravis- Draven and Sylara faced before. But before, they hasn't found the way to make the shadows materialize yet.

"That's where the source is," Dravis said, nodding towards the door. His voice was quiet, but it carried across the silence, drawing everyone's attention. "The power we've felt—whatever has been released—it's beyond that door."

"Prepare for battle, the instant we entered, we'll be facing a horde of enemies in an instant,"

The group stepped forward, crossing the narrow stone bridge with cautious precision. Beneath them, the deep chasm yawned, a void that seemed to swallow the very light around it. The air was electric with tension, each step echoing against the walls of the vast chamber. The magma bear followed closely, its molten body a dim but reassuring source of warmth in the otherwise cold and foreboding darkness.

Dravis, leading the way, approached the massive stone door. The runes etched across it pulsed ominously, their crimson glow casting eerie shadows along the cavern walls. He reached out, his fingers brushing against the runes, and immediately pulled back, feeling the sting of dark magic radiating through the stone.

"Be ready," Dravis said, his voice low but clear, his gaze turning to the others. "Once this door opens, the shadows will swarm us. Stick to the plan—use the bear's flames to force them into material form. No mistakes."

Sophie stepped forward, her blade held firmly in her hand, her eyes meeting Dravis's. She gave a nod, her expression filled with determination. "We're ready."

Sharon took a deep breath, her knuckles tightening around the hilt of her sword. She shot Sylvanna a quick glance, and the archer met her gaze with a nod—no teasing, no mockery. Just understanding. They knew what was ahead.

Dravis nodded once, then pressed his hand against the door. The runes glowed brighter, the crimson light intensifying until it flooded the chamber. A deep rumble echoed through the cavern as the massive door began to open, stone grinding against stone, and then, without warning, a blinding red light shot forth.

The ground trembled beneath their feet, the runes along the walls flaring to life, their light forming intricate patterns that spread across the stone floor, interconnecting until they converged into a massive magic circle. It glowed brightly, filling the chamber with an oppressive, pulsating light.

From the edges of the magic circle, shadows began to rise—no longer the formless entities they had faced before. The magic, activated by the bear's presence, forced the shadows into physical forms. Tall, twisted creatures pulled themselves from the ground, their bodies dark and rippling, their eyes glowing with a malevolent light.

"Here they come!" Sophie called, raising her frosted blade, her voice ringing with authority. "Everyone, stick together!"

The first wave of shadows lunged towards them, their forms shifting as they moved, claws outstretched. Dravis moved without hesitation, his twin blades slicing through the air, each movement precise and deadly. He struck at the nearest creature, his blades cutting through its solidified core, the dark mass dissolving into a burst of black mist.

Sharon roared, her broadsword arcing down with brutal force. She cleaved through a shadow, its form shuddering under her power before collapsing into nothingness. "Come on!" she shouted, her voice filled with fury and determination. "You want a fight? I'll give you a fight!"

Theo stepped up beside her, his shield raised, blocking the strike of another shadow as it lunged towards them. The force of the impact reverberated through his arm, but Theo held his ground, pushing back with all his might. He struck out with his sword, slicing cleanly through the creature, his movements steady and controlled.

Sylvanna, perched on a raised rock, let her arrows fly, each one imbued with a soft, glowing light. The arrows struck true, piercing the shadows with pinpoint accuracy, bursts of light dispelling the darkness. "Focus on their weak points!" she called, her voice carrying above the din of battle. "We can't let them regroup!"

Rhea moved through the chaos like a shadow herself, her twin daggers flashing as she danced between the enemies, striking at their cores before slipping back into the darkness. Her eyes were sharp, her movements fluid as she weaved between the larger knights, her strikes precise and deadly.

The magma bear roared, its molten body glowing brightly as it charged into the thick of the shadow horde. It swung its massive paw, the heat from its molten core incinerating the shadows on contact. The flames it generated lit up the cavern, forcing more of the shadows into material form, making them vulnerable to the knights' attacks.

Sophie fought with an elegance that belied the chaos around her. Her frosted blade moved in fluid arcs, each strike calculated, each swing deliberate. She froze the shadows in place before shattering them with swift, brutal efficiency. She moved alongside Theo, their coordination evident as he blocked incoming attacks while she delivered powerful blows, their synergy keeping the line intact.

Dravis's eyes flicked across the battlefield, noting the movement of each ally, each enemy. He saw how Sylvanna provided critical cover from her elevated position, how Sharon's brute strength broke through the enemy lines, how Theo's shield protected those behind him. He moved swiftly, filling in the gaps, his blades a blur as he intercepted shadows that threatened to overwhelm the group.

A shadow lunged towards Evan, its claws extended. The young knight hesitated for a brief moment, his eyes widening in fear as the creature bore down on him. But before it could strike, Rhea was there, her dagger flashing as she cut through the creature's core, dissolving it into mist.

"Focus, Evan!" Rhea snapped, her voice sharp but not unkind. "Stay close and watch your footing."
