The Genius Mage Was Reincarnated Into A Swordsman Family

Chapter 101: The Egg of Avarice

The egg rested in my hands, cool and unyielding, its surface as black as the void. I began by attempting to infuse it with the natural mana floating in the air around me, a simple test to see how it would respond. But nothing happened. The egg remained inert, as if unsatisfied, craving something more potent, something different. I could feel it—this egg wasn’t going to accept just any energy. It demanded more.

My thoughts drifted to my arcane energy, the very essence of my power. I knew that using it would likely provoke a reaction, but I hesitated. The egg intrigued me, and I wanted to understand its nature before giving in to its demands. Experimentation was the key to understanding, and I was determined to uncover the egg’s secrets.

I could not see the runes that Greed had claimed to have drawn on the egg, and that bothered me. Normally, I would shrug it off—there were always mysteries in the world that even an Archmage couldn’t decipher. But Greed’s peculiar warnings about Nicholas, the third-ranked trainee, gnawed at my pride. How could a mere child see something that I, a mage of the highest caliber in my past life, could not? It was an affront to my ego, a slight that I couldn’t easily dismiss.

There was something off about the egg’s surface. If I couldn’t see the runes, perhaps I could feel them? I began to gather all the natural mana in the air, drawing it toward the egg in an attempt to reveal its secrets. I even resorted to using the spell Veritas, a spell designed to reveal hidden truths, but still, nothing. The egg’s mysteries remained shrouded, and my frustration grew.

"I should’ve learned rune arts in my past life," I muttered to myself. Once, a nomadic tribe had offered to teach me, but I had declined. At the time, I was obsessed with magic, and nothing else mattered. Forbidden spells, ancient tomes—these were my priorities. The pursuit of magic had consumed me, leaving little room for anything else. But now, I regretted that decision. If only I had taken the time to learn rune arts, perhaps I wouldn’t be so blind to the secrets hidden in this egg.

After exhausting every spell and trick I knew, I finally gave up. I wasn’t the kind of man to waste time on things beyond my control. Yet, the idea of seeking Nicholas’s help lingered in my mind. Could I approach him and simply say, "Hey, this ring is actually a sword, and it told me you can see the runes on this egg. Is that true?" The thought was absurd. Nicholas would think I’d lost my mind. No, approaching him wasn’t an option. Not yet.

I decided it would be best to retreat to my room, away from prying eyes. There, I would have the privacy to delve deeper into the egg’s mysteries. As I made my way through the training ground, several trainees stopped me, asking if I had given up on hatching the egg today. They all assumed that, as a swordmaster, I could hatch it in a single day.

I probably could, I thought, but this egg was different. It wasn’t craving mana or blood like the others. It wanted something else—arcane energy. n/ô/vel/b//jn dot c//om

Finally, in the peace of my room, I sat by my bed and began to carefully infuse the egg with just a tiny bit of my arcane energy. The response was immediate. The egg trembled in my hands, almost as if it was satisfied with the small offering.

’Since this is the second fragment of Greed, can I also form a contract with it? Or will their personalities just fuse together?’ I wondered, genuinely intrigued. I now understood that Greed had split himself into multiple pieces, each fragment pursuing power without being limited to a single host. That’s what he had told me when I asked about the other fragments.

Curiosity getting the better of me, I infused another droplet of arcane energy into the egg. It shook again, more vigorously this time, as if it was pleased. I couldn’t help but smile at the way it reacted. There was something almost amusing about it, the way it seemed to respond like a living creature.

Deciding to push further, I summoned my dark flames—a fusion of my arcane energy and the Lionhart Flames art. I infused a small amount of these flames into the egg, far less than the arcane energy I had given it before. The reaction was immediate and intense. The egg shook violently, its surface glowing with an ominous light as if it was thrilled with the offering.

"So, my flames are more delicious than my arcane energy, huh?" I said, half-jokingly, as if the egg could understand me. "Well then, let’s get started for real."

With those words, I began to infuse the egg with a steady stream of my dark flames. The egg shook and glowed more intensely, the ominous light growing brighter as it absorbed my energy. But then, I heard a voice—Greed’s voice—echoing in my mind.

{HEY!!! STOP!!! Hey! Can’t you hear me? Stop now! I just remembered what those rune are! Hey, Klaus, stop now!}

Greed’s voice was frantic, panicked even. It cut through the haze that was beginning to cloud my mind, snapping me back to reality. I hadn’t even noticed it, but my thoughts were drifting, my focus slipping away as I fed the egg. How was this possible? My Four Eyes of the Ten Eyes Mantra were clearly open—my mind should have been protected.

Realizing the danger, I immediately stopped feeding the egg with my flames. But it was too late. The egg continued to glow with that ominous black light, even without my flames fueling it. I watched in horror as the light seemed to be absorbed into the egg, disappearing into its depths.

Then, as the light faded, the runes appeared—glowing, ancient symbols etched across the surface of the egg, their meaning hidden but their power unmistakable.

CRACK.

"Fuck," I whispered, the word escaping my lips as I saw a crack form on the egg. It was too late. Whatever was sealed inside was waking up, and I had no idea what I had just unleashed.
