Pregnant After Healing the Alpha

Chapter 144 - 137: The Killer Appears

Chapter 144: Chapter 137: The Killer Appears

Zhan Qipei looked down at Qiao Jing and smiled, “You really do understand me.”

Qiao Jing frowned, “So you did this on purpose just to lure out the person behind Lan Yinyin?”

“Yes.”

“Aren’t you afraid that the assassin sent this time will be even more formidable than the last? Aren’t you scared of losing your life in Autumn Water Village?” Qiao Jing didn’t quite agree with Zhan Qipei risking himself like this.

If it were her, she would have directly dealt with Lan Yinyin, and as for the people behind her, she would handle them one by one.

This might be related to personal character and upbringing. As the president of Zhan Corporation, Zhan Qipei was used to setting and solving traps, while she was more straightforward.

As long as it didn’t bother her, it was fine. But if it did, a beating followed by a trip to the police station was in order.

While Qiao Jing was deep in thought, the man’s deep voice suddenly sounded next to her ear.

“How do you know the last assassin was very formidable? Did you fight with them?”

The slight raise of Qiao Jing’s eyebrows was almost imperceptible; she could tell the man was deliberately testing her.

It was best not to respond.

Seeing that Qiao Jing wasn’t speaking, Zhan Qipei didn’t feel bored at all.

If she wouldn’t speak, then he was content just quietly watching her.

Several hours later, the two arrived at Autumn Water Village.

The first thing Qiao Jing did upon returning to Autumn Water Village was to buy some spirit money and go to Grandpa Zhang’s grave.

“Grandpa, I’m here to see you. Did you miss me?”

While burning the spirit money, Qiao Jing spoke to the grave.

Zhan Qipei knelt down close to Qiao Jing, picked some spirit money, and burned it in the fire basin.

Qiao Jing glanced sideways at Zhan Qipei, wondering why he had to be so close to her while he burned the paper.

Turning his head, Zhan Qipei caught Qiao Jing looking at him, and the meaning in her eyes was clear.

“It’s cold. Get closer, it’s warmer,” Zhan Qipei said nonchalantly.

No sooner had Zhan Qipei spoken than Qiao Jing reached out and touched the back of his hand.

“Warmer than mine.”

As she spoke, Qiao Jing gave Zhan Qipei a meaningful look.

“Oh, then let me warm you up,” Zhan Qipei uttered, enveloping Qiao Jing’s hand in his palm.

Qiao Jing gave off a very independent and self-reliant impression, unlike the fragile ladies from wealthy families; she never relied on anyone.

She seemed very strong.

But—

In reality, her hands were thin and small, soft and powerless, feeling like cotton when held that made one want to protect her.

Qiao Jing pulled a face and withdrew her hand from Zhan Qipei’s large palm.

She was starting to find Zhan Qipei incomprehensible; the things he had been saying and doing lately were simply too strange.

Qiao Jing continued to burn spirit money for Grandpa Zhang, while Zhan Qipei stood up and looked around, noticing the numerous fields nearby.

In the countryside, the graves are different from those in the city, where there are special cemeteries for worship. In the countryside, especially in backward areas like Autumn Water Village, many graves are buried on hilltops.

Zhang Ruicheng’s grave was one of them.

“Where are you going?” Seeing Zhan Qipei about to leave, Qiao Jing asked curiously.

“Nature calls. Is there a bathroom?” Zhan Qipei looked around but did not see anything resembling a bathroom.

“The mountain is full of spots; just find a place,” Qiao Jing replied and then continued talking to the grave without further attention to Zhan Qipei.

Zhan Qipei glanced back at Qiao Jing then quickly left to find a secluded spot to relieve himself.

After taking care of business, Zhan Qipei was about to head back when he was drawn to a field nearby.

“This piece of land…”

It looked increasingly familiar.

Zhan Qipei watched as he approached.

It seemed like he had been here before.

Gradually, memories started to emerge bit by bit, becoming clearer and clearer.

Soon, he traced back to three months ago when he drove to Autumn Water Village. Just after entering the village, he was suddenly rear-ended by a car behind him.

At first, he thought it was a simple traffic accident, but what he didn’t expect was that the car behind continued to ram into him.

He hurriedly got out of the car, his body accruing many injuries. If it weren’t for this, he wouldn’t have been so desperately chased by two assassins.

Alone, he ran desperately. As the blood flowed more and more, his physical condition worsened, and his vision became increasingly blurred.

Dimly, he saw a cornfield close by that he could hide in; without another thought, he plunged into it.

It seemed to be this field.

Now, the cornfield was left with only the stubble from the autumn harvest, bunched up in heaps.

Whether it really was this place, Zhan Qipei wasn’t too sure.

Not to mention that the cornfield had changed to this state, even if it still looked the same as before, given that Autumn Water Village had so many such cornfields, he couldn’t be certain that this was the one.

But it really resembled it…n/ô/vel/b//jn dot c//om

He needed to find out who owned this cornfield.

Just as Zhan Qipei was trying hard to remember, he suddenly felt someone approaching him.

Zhan Qipei looked towards the shadow on the ground. Indeed, someone was approaching him, and they were holding a knife.

Zhan Qipei’s eyes narrowed, a chill flashed in his eyes, his whole body on alert, waiting for the other party to get close enough for a surprise counterattack.

Suddenly!

The person behind him lunged forward, swinging the knife towards Zhan Qipei’s head.

Already on guard, Zhan Qipei quickly dodged to the side, and while moving to the assailant’s side, he grabbed the knife and kicked the attacker away.

“Who are you? Who sent you?”

As soon as Zhan Qipei finished asking, he felt more people approaching from behind.

Not just one person!

Zhan Qipei turned around, ready to strike, only to see the other party pull something from their clothes and spray it towards his eyes with a “chi—” sound.

Instantly, Zhan Qipei felt his eyes burning as if they weren’t his own anymore.

Just then, the person he had just kicked down got up from the ground, knife in hand, and stabbed at his lower back.

Zhan Qipei, though quick to react and swiftly dodged, still got grazed on the arm by the knife.

Zhan Qipei stepped back a few paces, shook his head, and tried to open his eyes wide to see the two assassins opposite him.

He had underestimated them. Both were top-notch assassins with methods beyond ordinary killers. Their exceptionally synchronized coordination, coupled with their underhanded tactics of ambush and treachery, had put him at a significant disadvantage.

It wasn’t over yet. Another five or six people emerged from hiding, surrounding Zhan Qipei, leaving him no chance to escape.

Well done!

Lan Yinyin uttered to herself from the shadows.

This was exactly the effect she wanted. She would wait a bit longer for Zhan Qipei to sustain serious injuries and be driven into a corner before she would appear.

At that moment, she would be Zhan Qipei’s only hope in his dying struggles, his only light.

Perhaps then, Zhan Qipei might fall in love with her.

Three minutes later.

Because Zhan Qipei couldn’t see clearly, and because there were too many of them,

he was stabbed five or six times back and forth.

Though none were fatal, his body was covered in blood, looking quite a mess.

Lan Yinyin gave a look to one of them, signaling that they could escalate the violence.

Receiving the signal, the assassin fiercely plunged the knife towards Zhan Qipei’s left chest.
